Canopy notices your journeys, food, shopping and digital use, gives you the one swap a day that matters most, and turns the emissions you avoid into leaves that grow a real community grove.

How it works

Four steps, no diaries

Most carbon apps ask you to log things. Canopy notices instead, then keeps it to one useful thing a day.

  1. Step 1

    It notices your day

Walks, rides, trains, takeaways and scans are picked up automatically. You can correct any trip in a tap.

  2. Step 2

    One swap a day

Not fifty tips. The single swap that saves the most, ranked by kilograms, like walking a short trip you usually drive.

  3. Step 3

    Leaves for what you avoid

Leaves are earned only for emissions you avoided, never for spending. Spend them at local low-carbon businesses; the ones from CO₂ you avoided count toward the community grove.

  4. Step 4

    A real community grove

Every month Canopy plants £20 of real trees for everyone, with Ecologi. Only leaves from CO₂ you avoided count. Trees grow over years, not days, and never offset your footprint, so reducing always comes first.

What it notices

The big levers first

Travel and food are where most everyday emissions are. Canopy shows them biggest, and never gives a tiny thing the same weight as a big one.

Travel

  • Trips detected from your phone's motion sensors and GPS, on the phone.
  • Workouts from Apple Health help tell a run from a ride.
  • Trains recognised when a trip starts and ends at National Rail stations.
  • Mode and distance are always yours to correct.

10 km by car: 1.7 kg. By Underground: 280 g. On foot: 0 g. UK Government (DESNZ/DEFRA) GHG conversion factors, per passenger-km

Takeaways

  • Finds order receipts in your email only if you connect it, and you pick which ones to read.
  • Counts the meal and the delivery ride, and suggests collecting when it's close.
  • The email itself is never stored.

Beef: 27 kg CO₂e per kg. Chicken: 6 kg. Tofu: 2 kg. Poore & Nemecek 2018, Science (via Our World in Data)

Shopping

  • Scan a barcode for a farm-to-shelf grade from A to E.
  • See a lighter pick on the same shelf, shown as a category, never a sponsored product.
  • A scan never adds to your footprint; only "I bought this" does.

Grade A: under 1 kg CO₂e per kg. Grade E: over 15 kg. Open Food Facts, Agribalyse life-cycle data

Digital ESTIMATES

  • Charging, data and AI prompts, always labelled as estimates.
  • Always shown next to the big categories, so you can see how small it is.

A year of phone charging: ~0.9 kg, about the same as a 5 km drive. UK grid electricity 0.20 kg/kWh (DESNZ/DEFRA) × about 0.012 kWh a charge; low confidence

Why it's different

Honest numbers, at the right size

Every figure in Canopy comes from a published emission factor with its source, year and confidence. Low confidence figures carry a "~" and the word estimate. Nothing is shown with more precision than it has.

Quiz calculators

How it works
Answer questions once and get a yearly estimate.
Good for
A starting point. Canopy uses a short quiz for exactly this, then watches what actually happens.

Bank-spend apps

How it works
Estimate emissions from what you spend in each category.
Good for
A broad view. Canopy looks at the trip, the meal and the product instead of the price.

Offset subscriptions

How it works
Pay monthly to fund projects that balance emissions.
Good for
Funding projects. Canopy puts reducing first, and never calls a tree an offset.

Canopy

How it works
Notices trips, orders and scans as they happen, on your phone.
What you get
One swap a day ranked by kg, leaves only for what you avoid, and trees that grow for years after you've reduced.

Privacy

On your phone by default

Canopy needs to see your day to be useful, so it is built to keep that day to itself. No ads, no data sales, no analytics on this site.

Trips and places stay on your phone

Location, motion, Health workouts, scans and your footprint are stored on the device. Train stations are matched on the phone too.

Sharing is opt-in

Join a league or a household and only what that feature needs is shared: a display name and leaves, never trips, places or kilograms. Receipts are read only with your consent and never stored raw.

Gmail receipts are optional and read-only

If you connect Gmail (UK only for now), Canopy asks Google for read-only access, only to find receipts from takeaways, ride hire and shops and estimate their carbon footprint for you. Personal details are removed on your phone first; the email text is never stored, never sold, never used for ads or to train AI. Disconnect any time. How Canopy uses Google user data

Delete everything in one tap

Settings lets you export all your data or delete all of it, including anything on our server. Read the privacy policy

Together

We, not I. No shaming.

Small steps add up when people take them together. Every social feature ranks leaves earned from avoided emissions, never spending, and nobody sees your trips.

Households

Up to five people share one grove and a combined budget, built only from the days each person chooses to share. Nobody is ranked against their family.

City leagues and teams

Pick your city from a list (it's never worked out from your location) or start a team with a short code. Leave any time.

Friends

Invite a friend with a link. You see each other's name and leaves, and either of you can remove the friendship. No streak-loss nags, and at most one nudge a day.

Canopy+

Free stays free

Everything that reduces carbon is free and always will be. Canopy+ is a membership for people who want to do a bit more, and it keeps the app free for everyone else.

Free, forever

£0no ads, no data sales

FAQ

Straight answers

How accurate are the numbers?

As accurate as the published factors behind them, and no more. Travel uses UK Government (DESNZ/DEFRA) conversion factors, food uses Poore & Nemecek 2018, and scanned products use Agribalyse data from Open Food Facts. Each factor carries a source, a year and a confidence level.

Figures are shown to two significant figures at most. Low-confidence ones, such as digital use or category guesses for a product, carry a "~" and are labelled as estimates. The factors are approximate today and are re-checked against the current year's sources before public launch.

What happens to my location and receipts?

Location, motion and trips stay on your phone. If you connect Gmail (read-only), Canopy finds likely receipts on the phone and you choose which to read; personal details are removed on the phone, the rest is sent to our server only to pull out the order details, and the email itself is never stored. See Google user data in the privacy policy.

Why do trees come after reducing?

Because a tree absorbs carbon over years, not days. An emission you avoid today is gone today, so Canopy always shows ways to reduce first, and only then ways to balance what's left. Trees are planted by partners checked against a recognised standard.

What are leaves?

Leaves are Canopy's reward for emissions you avoided: 10 leaves for each kilogram, plus a few for things like the day's biggest win. They never come from spending, and no business can pay for placement.

You can spend them at local low-carbon businesses. Leaves from CO₂ you avoided also count toward the community grove: £20 of real trees Canopy plants every month for everyone.

What's free, and what does Canopy+ add?

Everything that reduces carbon is free: journeys, the daily win, takeaways, digital, 10 scans a day, leaves, leagues, friends and the community grove. Canopy+ (£4.99 a month or £39.99 a year) adds a tree planted every month, unlimited scans, weekly insights, household mode, seasonal themes and a member badge.

Will Canopy nag me?

No. At most one nudge a day by default, no guilt copy and no streak-loss shaming. If you skip a suggestion, it stays quiet for a week.

Is it on iPhone and Android?

Both are coming soon, starting in the UK. Store links will appear on this page when it launches. In the meantime, you can reach the founder at founder@ed-any.com.
